Lessons from Subroto Bagchi

I am trying to put together some of Subroto's lessons collected from different sources starting with his new book 'The Professional' and then working backwards. These lessons are not only applicable for a professional but I think most of them, if not all, hold good for every human being. I will be updating this as and when I come across new learnings available in public domain. Having said this, I would like to quote Subroto's last line in the book : "Ultimately, being a professional is a matter of personal choice and the values we opt to live by."

  1. A professional in any field is admired for few important qualities and following are the top 10 attributes of a professional:
    • Integrity
    • Commitment & ownership
    • Action orientation and goal seeking
    • Continuous learning
    • Professional knowledge/skills
    • Communication
    • Planning, organizing and puntuality
    • Quality of work
    • A positive attitude, approachability & responsiveness
    • Being an inspiring reference to others; thought leadership
    1. Having mentioned about qualities of a professional, it is equally important to understand what is unprofessional conduct. Below are top 10 signs of unprofessional conduct:
      • Missing a deadline
      • Non-escalation of issues on time
      • Non-disclosure
      • Not respecting privacy of information
      • Not respecting 'need to know'
      • Plagiarism
      • Passing on the blame
      • Overstating qualifications and experience
      • Mindless job hopping
      • Unsuitable appearance
